Voting address census: who are voting for what

#method and data

Using the getblock rpc command I extracted voting information of all blocks from #940000 (June 28, 2016) to #950000 (July 4, 2016).

Raw data are too big to post. There are 41 motion/grants that have received at least 1 vote.

[full table is still too big to post. if people want i can post in split pieces]
[Here are examples of two high count motions]

A line not starting with a # has a motion hash or grant addresses, followed by total votes it had received in the 10,000 block window. Below every motion/grant line there are a number of lines starting with #. These are break down of the votes which the motion/grant received. Each lines shows which NSR address voted how many times for the motion/grant, and its balance when the statistics were taken.

  • There are 302 unique addresses, who controlled 472m NSR, minted at least one block.
  • There are 288 addresses voted (95% addresses and 98% shares).

#Dominating amount of shares controlled by one person

It caught my attention that for every motion/grant that are near-passing or have passed (having more than several thousands votes) there are some high value powerful voters. These addresses repeatedly appear in the near passing or passed motions.

I find 76 addresses only voted exactly same motions/grants:

SUrJhmYVeNThoG6oFWjY9pMawRJ3iCTHCq ShrB92Q61TiL9ZaQXZQCMB2qszYKqTMkGU f8b9e060dc73a97fd28a62ecfdd419114892787a 57ee6c5da13b0c91ca05a4f32e1a7bf9b44811b4 1118f2334d0ef45676b38ebe2daaf30a8a345a7f

, all in the same order as recorded in the blockchain. This last point suggests that these addresses are controlled by one person or the voting was set up using the same script / datafeed.

Let’s see what are these motion/grants:

  • SUrJhmYVeNThoG6oFWjY9pMawRJ3iCTHCq [Passed] Grant NSR to Phoenix for liquidity operations
  • ShrB92Q61TiL9ZaQXZQCMB2qszYKqTMkGU [Passed] Elect Phoenix as Chief of Liquidity Operations (compromise version)
  • f8b9e060dc73a97fd28a62ecfdd419114892787a [Voting] Temporarily cap NBT supply with full reserve
  • 57ee6c5da13b0c91ca05a4f32e1a7bf9b44811b4 [Passed] Create Chief of Liquidity Operations Position
  • 1118f2334d0ef45676b38ebe2daaf30a8a345a7f 100% Reserve Required for NuBits

As it turns out they all belong to @phoenix. Neither @cybnate’s or @cryptog’s feed carried this set, so these synchronized votes are not from public community members.

Similarly I looked at who are voting for

  • faafd2dea7c11fc27155118469140c0b0dd66eb3 [Voting] A Report on Peg Abandonment and How to Proceed From Here

which is not in the previous list. 16 additional voters who exclusively voted for @phoenix’s motion/grant in synchronized orders.

The behaviour of these 92 addresses (listed with balances below) shows that @Phoenix directly or indirectly controls these addresses, which owns a total of 206m NSR (44.6% of all voting shares).

Considering at normal times only 1/3 (~300m) of all shares mint and half most of those vote, Nu network voting power is highly centralized.

That appears bad – and not secure
@Phoenix care to comment?

That appears highly centralized.
That is why @Phoenix would want to sell a lot of nushares.
To distribute shares and decentralize the network if i see the problem from an optimistic view.

Double edge sword, this also means phoenix has big incentive to repair peg.

@cryptog’s datafeed had ~40 subscribing addresses with ~75m nsr
@Cybnate’s datafeed had ~60 subscribing addresses with ~52m nsr
@Phoenix controls ~90 addresses with 206m nsr

total voting shares is 462m

i applaud your research, very well done. however, it clearly shows that nu dao is not dao at all and a lot less interesting beast than I thought previously

it explains a lot about motion and grant voting during the life of nu.

imho share distribution is so skewed that nothing short of starting again would fix it unfortunately.

Hope some one follows “Don’t be evil”, in 2009, Sotoshi controlled 80% hashrate of Bitcoin, Nu’s future depends on its creator’s character and moral.

current voting behaviour of these shares is evidence of opposite. instead of letting dao rule, central control is employed to force creators opinion onto everyone.

Initial share distribution is a hard problem to solve.

I understand your point. The thing is that PoS is a double edge sword. You vote by holding shares but at the same time, you can get control over the network is you buy a lot of shares. There will be something more fair in the future but right now we need probably to do with it.

Wow – datafeed count.
Curious about how you deducted the figures – how have you differentiated these 2 providers in the blocks?

there are patterns of votings change when a feed add/remove motion/grants.

Sometimes truth in in the hands of a few.

Does the community have better plan than phoenix’s now? I doubt it.

personally, I thought reaching concensus about way of increasing revenues via wider spreads and/or higher fees were necessary before attempts to repeg at old level.

moreover, about truth in the hands of a few, it was paramount for truly distributed organisation to reach others with your truth, distribute the knowledge amongst peers, not hoard it and ignore questions.

I wonder how many votes Phoenix’s motions received which did not match the sequential order. (ie how many votes that were not cast by Phoenix)

While the discussion going on here will undoubtedly be shrugged off as an irrelevant distraction, there is a strong argument to be made that decentralization is far more important than even the peg.

This is troubling information.

There are lots of NuShares voting for my motions and grants. That shouldn’t be a surprise. Those that voted for some tend to vote for others, because they are all part of a coherent approach to supporting the peg.

The last couple weeks I have seen a decline in the quality of @mhps’s contributions here. This one is quite disappointing. It contains a number of baseless claims, some provably false with public information, while other claims can’t be proven or dis-proven at all, including by @mhps.

These are reckless and in many cases incorrect claims that have some appearance of rigor due to the inclusion of numbers and addresses.

I realize it is hard for many to accept my popularity with shareholders. It shouldn’t come as a surprise given the success I have brought to the network in my very short time as Chief of Liquidity Operations.

Regardless of the reliability of @mhps s data, i think it is fair to say that the security of Nu depends on the distribution of PoS, which is basically the distribution of NuShares over nodes.
Asking about the distribution of shares is equivalent to asking about the distribution of mining over mining pools in case of Bitcoin.
So I think you can agree on the fact that it is a legitimate question.
Nu would never be able to become a 1b usd market cap network if the security is poor.
It would help us sell more nushares as a high price if we are able to show that Nu is secure.
Any information or insight from you regarding current nsr distribution topology would be tremendously valuable for everybody.

There were 105 addresses 247m nsr voting for SUrJhmYVeNThoG6oFWjY9pMawRJ3iCTHCu

There were 107 addresses 250m nsr voting for SUrJhmYVeNThoG6oFWjY9pMawRJ3iCTHCu and faafd2dea7c11fc27155118469140c0b0dd66eb3

Of these 107 addresses 15 (44m NDR) don’t appear in the list in OP.

In the same order when they enter 5 motion/grants which came out at about the same time? I expect different individual entered in random orders.

Oh well.

Anyone including you is welcome to point out error and space for improvements. The conclusions were what (strongly) suggested by public data.

I will modify OP to show detailed voting results for SUrJhmYVeNThoG6oFWjY9pMawRJ3iCTHCu and faafd2dea7c11fc27155118469140c0b0dd66eb3

Great work @mhps, I can imagine that took some time. I have two very busy weeks right now but would be very happy to contribute next weekend if its still on the table by then.

Already pretty easy to connect to JL: The 20M grant address was SUrJhmYVeNThoG6oFWjY9pMawRJ3iCTHCq which exchanged coins later on with SWxMEcQJmFpcQQug2SpA5ocZbpLVgta4tq ( http://nuexplorer.ddns.net/transactions/737b6427bebd3f65f67d358cb04a73a9d159ed0f27d4e50783d133db0d2d6ae0 ), which in turn was used to fund SMbdaiUQsqNhbYmJtQ2f8hmqjCxM8NyFic on July 27th: http://nuexplorer.ddns.net/transactions/5134c177254ce8813d5e66696145b69f6c1fc0f7f5fc8ce3dbc26a49dba268b0

^ this was now just by looking, no script involved. Should be doable to make an exhaustive search over night to find all of them, but this week is really problematic.

Unfortunately I don’t see what the conclusion of this investigation should be beyond exposing JL yet another time. If anything it will just discourage the last few people to contribute to this project and without alternative the interest could fade away quite quickly (not saying that this will be the case).

Anyways, thanks for creating these statistics.

if JL held 200m+ NSR during the BKS airdrop he probably has well over 20k BKS, or more than 10% of BCE. The actual amount is probably closer to 40k.
